Why Study Biochemistry: Health Sciences at EIU?

  • Complete all pre-health prerequisites including medical, dental, pharmacy, and veterinary program requirements within a single degree program
  • Master foundational principles across physical, analytical, organic, and biological chemistry to understand human health and disease at the molecular level.
  • Prepare for medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, and allied health careers or graduate programs through focused clinical and biochemical coursework.
  • Understand how heath is impacted by molecular level interactions through in-depth coursework.
  • Work directly with faculty in small class settings and as part of research projects.
"EIU provided me with a strong background in science. The problem solving I learned during chemistry helped for a smooth transition into grad school. I would definitely recommend EIU to future students in health related fields."

What You'll Learn

The major gives a firm foundation in chemistry as well as in-depth exposure to the field of biochemistry, for those students who are focused on going on to a professional health profession school and want more flexibility in their schedule than the traditional BS Biochemistry provides while also including the common required courses for admission.  The small class size at the upper level courses, as well as the opportunity for engaging in research in the Dept directly with the faculty, give an individualized experience.  Communication skills are stressed, and many students go on to present at local, regional, and national meetings.
