Biochemistry

These degrees provide a deep learning into the fundamentals of chemistry with significant emphasis on biochemistry, coupled with hands-on lab experiences and use of instrumentation, and provide a firm background for entering industry or pursuing advanced (PhD, MS) degrees. They are also excellent choice of a degree to go onto professional health-care schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary, Dental, Optometry, etc).

Why Study Biochemistry at EIU?

  • Earn an American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degree that gives your credentials immediate national recognition for graduate programs and jobs.
  • Master foundational principles across biological, organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that govern living systems and solve complex biomolecular problems critical to global health, technology, and society.
  • Prepare for chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical and other health-related careers or graduate and professional programs through focused coursework.
  • Understand how biochemical systems work at the molecular level by using modern equipment and techniques to run experiments and gain experience for biotechnology industrial employment and graduate programs..
  • Work directly with faculty in small class settings and as part of research projects.
"EIU did a great job of helping me learn a good foundation in science and even more importantly I gained critical experience in evaluating often very difficult problems. Both the junior and senior seminars that we were required to give allowed me to really understand critically evaluating basic and clinical science research."

Hands-On Experience

  • Isolate, purify, and characterize biomolecules and organic compounds using multi-step chromatography, gel electrophoresis, real-time assay protocols, and advanced instrumental analysis.
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative data to extract kinetic constants, thermodynamic values, and molecular structures.
  • Map 3D macromolecular structures and visualize enzyme-substrate binding interactions using specialized software.
  • Evaluate cutting-edge scientific literature and deliver oral presentations in junior and senior seminars.
  • Investigate real scientific questions in faculty research labs and communicate your discovery process through poster presentations and conference talks.
