English Language Arts: Program Requirements for Student Teaching

Program Requirements for Student Teaching
- Attend Required College of Education Meeting to be formally admitted into the Teacher Education Program
- Complete course requirements with a C or better in every required course (major and non-major)
- Earn at least a 2.75 GPA in English and a cumulative GPA of 2.75 overall *
- Attend 2 professional conferences or the equivalent of 6 one-hour lectures
- Present at the Spring English Studies Student Conference at least once
- Apply for Student Teaching one year prior to student teaching (deadlines are typically in late Oct/early November & late Feb/early March)
- Prepare a professional portfolio (see Checklist for English Education Majors for contents)
- Earn positive evaluations from faculty on digitally submitted disposition evaluation forms (formerly referred to as "Yellow Sheets") forms (students must provide faculty member with this link to access the online Departmental Disposition Form) *
*The English Education Program monitors and supports students as they progress through the program. Should students struggle to meet academic and dispositional benchmarks there are policies in place for remediation (so that students can successfully reach their end goal of becoming a teacher), as well as a dismissal process (to support students if a change in major is required).
