Student Organizations

Two student organizations are closely affiliated with the Department of English. Our faculty also serve as advisers for several university-wide RSOs.

English Club

English Club is open to all students, regardless of major, who have interests in literature, language, and writing. English Club coordinates writers' circles for creative writers in various genres, sponsors social events, coordinates group trips to theater productions locally, and organizes other social and academic activities of interest to its members.  For Fall 2025, the English Club meets weekly on Thursdays from 5 PM to 6 PM in Coleman Hall 3150.

For more information about English Club, contact Prof. Angela Vietto.

Sigma Tau Delta

The Upsilon Gamma chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society, is one of the oldest chapters in the nation. The organization’s purpose is to confer distinction for high academic achievement in English studies; to promote interest in literature, language, and writing; and to foster the discipline of English in all aspects.

Each year, members of the Upsilon Gamma chapter of Sigma Tau Delta travel to the National Convention to present their academic research on topics ranging from literary analysis to film studies to pedagogy, to read their creative works, and to participate in workshops and network with their peers and professionals across the country.
If you have taken at least two classes in the English department at EIU beyond first-year composition and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, you can contact Prof. Melissa Caldwell for an application.
