English Studies
The ENGLISH MAJOR WITH AN EMPHASIS IN ENGLISH STUDIES offers maximum flexibility for students who want a broad background encompassing all areas of English Studies, or who have specialized interests and want to design their own English major. Often students pursuing English Studies have a very specific goal in mind—teaching English abroad or pursuing a career in the film industry, for example.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
This elective-based major allows students to customize their coursework in a way that most directly aligns with their long-term goals. The emphasis requires 29 credits of coursework in English, with at least 24 of those credits at the 3000-level or above, and includes 3 credits in Multicultural and Non-Western Literature. This 44-credit hour major allows students the time to pair their major program with a second major or a minor, or to pursue internship opportunities to further enhance their skills.
WHAT CAREERS CAN I PURSUE?
Careers paths for graduates of the English major with an English Studies emphasis largely depend upon the way the student shapes their degree. Students will learn how to navigate the complexities of the job market in our senior level Career Development course, where they will explore career options while honing materials for their next step.
Depending on the courses chosen, students can use this degree as a springboard to careers in writing, editing, human resources, marketing, content creation, teaching English abroad, among others.
