What Are the Degree Requirements?

To earn your Master of Arts degree, you will complete a minimum of 32 credit hours (most students graduate with 33 credit hours, as courses are typically 3 credits each).

  1. Core Coursework (a minium 12 Credit Hours)
  • PLS 5053: Research Methods (3 credits)
  • Two Political Science Proseminars (6 credits)
  • Graduation Track (3–6 credits): Choose between a Thesis Option (typically 6 credits, in two semesters) or a Capstone Project (3 credits).
  1. Electives (a minimum of 17–20 Credit Hours)
  • Students can take elective courses offered at the graduate level, including traditional political science, public policy, public administration, international/comparative seminars, political theory, and public law.
  • Students can also sign up for additional coursework tailored to their career or research interests by participating in professional Internships, Study Abroad Programs, and independent Studies.
  • Students need to meet the minimum credit hours requirement for Political Science and Public Policy/Administration electives.
