Math Placement at EIU
Before you register for classes, you’ll need to be placed into the right math course. Don’t worry, this isn’t about passing or failing. It’s just about finding the class that fits you best so you can start strong.
Not sure if you need to do math placement / testing? Your MyEIU checklist will notify you if you do!
If you don’t have transfer, dual credit, or AP math credit, your placement will be determined using one of the options below:
Option 1: Use Your ACT or SAT Math Score
- If you have an ACT or SAT math score on file at Eastern, we’ll use your Math subscore to place you into a math course.
- For some majors, meeting a minimum score means you can skip placement testing entirely and go straight into your required math class.
- If your score is below the minimum for your major, or if your major requires it, you may still need to complete placement before registering.
- If you’d like to try for a higher placement, you can choose to take the ALEKS placement test.
Option 2: Take the ALEKS Math Placement
- If you don’t have ACT/SAT math scores on file, or if your major requires placement, you’ll use the ALEKS placement test.
- You can also take ALEKS if you want to improve your placement and potentially start in a higher-level math course.
- This isn’t a high-pressure test. It’s designed to figure out what you’re ready for right now so you don’t end up in a class that’s too easy or too challenging.
Here’s what to expect:
- You can take the test up to 5 times
- You’ll get access to practice modules between attempts to improve your score
- It’s free for incoming EIU students
- Your placement is valid for 2 years
- It’s managed through EIU Testing & Evaluation

Math Placement Requirements by Major / Pathway
The charts below show the scores needed to start in your major or pathway and how your math placement may impact your progress.
Start at Required Math Level
These scores allow you to begin at the math level expected for your major or pathway, without taking additional math courses first.
Minimum to Begin Pathway
These scores allow you to start your major or pathway, but you may need to complete one or more math courses before reaching the required level. This can add time and additional coursework.
How to use these charts
- Find your major or pathway
- Check your ACT or SAT Math score first
- If you don’t have a score on file, or want to improve your placement, use your ALEKS score
Important notes
- SAT and ACT scores listed are based on your Math subscore only, not your overall ACT or SAT score
- ACT, SAT, or ALEKS may all be used for placement, depending on your situation
- Starting below the required math level may mean taking additional courses before progressing in your program
Don’t see your major listed?
You do not need to take a math placement test for course registration.
