Summer 2026 Study Abroad Trip to Florence, Italy

EIU Study Abroad Program of the Year (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020)EIU study abroad

As the birthplace of modern humanism, naturalistic arts, and scientific inquiry, Florence was the cradle of the Renaissance civilization. For centuries, travelers and admirers of art and culture have fallen in love with this city and the undulating countryside that surrounds it. Extraordinarily rich in history and ancient traditions, the city, with its world-famous artistic heritage, offers the student a wide spectrum of cultural experiences. The city is also known for its exceptional cuisine, characteristic restaurants, ice cream (gelato) parlors, wine bars, elegant shops, artistic workshops and traditional markets.

This 6-credit hour, 20-day program will allow you to discover the must-see sights of places like Rome, Florence, and Venice, plus other Italian cities and villages. Learn how to cook pasta in Florence, and admire the famous works of the Renaissance period (Michelangelo's statue of David), and cruise the canals and streets of Venice.

Students will learn about Italian wine making and pasta production; study the culture and lifestyle of Italy; meet with artisans in Florence; and tour production facilities of places like Ducati motorcycles, Pagani or Lamborghini automotive manufacturers, and the Ferrari Museum. There are also daily and weekend trips to places such as Pisa, Rome, Bologna, and Venice.

Students will stay in rental housing near downtown Florence, within a 15-minute walking distance from the Florence University of the Arts facilities. The apartments (accommodating 4-8 students each) are equipped with cooking capabilities and bedding.

The 2026 trip will take place from May 17 through June 5.  If you are interested, please contact Professor Jay Grabiec at jjgrabiec@eiu.edu.
