EIU Campus Access to Contraception & Medication Abortion
Public Act 104-0433 amended the Public Higher Education Act to require public institutions of higher education with student health services to (1) ensure student access to contraception and medication abortion beginning in the 2025–2026 school year.
Contraception Access Through On-Campus Means
- The Sarah Bush Lincoln - EIU Medical Clinic staffs three nurse practitioners who provide contraceptive consults and who prescribe various forms of birth control, including, oral contraceptives, hormonal contraceptive patches, hormonal vaginal contraceptive rings, and hormonal, progestin-only contraceptive injections.
- These services are available to EIU Students enrolled in on-campus programs who are automatically assessed the semester Health and Counseling Services Fee. Students enrolled in on-line or off-campus programs may opt into purchasing these services.
- Appointments for contraceptive consultations and services may be made by phone by calling 217/581-3013 or by visiting the SBL-EIU Medical Clinic located in the Human Services Building. The Clinic is open from 8:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 4:30 M-F during the fall and spring semesters and from 8:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 4:30 M-R and 8:00 - 12:00 on Fridays during the summer term.
- Eastern Illinois University no longer operates an on-campus pharmacy. Students may obtain prescriptions through:
- having scripts sent to off-campus pharmacies and utilizing private insurance or pharmacy discount card/offer
- having scripts sent to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital and couriered back to the SBL-EIU Medical Clinic and billed to their student account.
- For off-campus care, students are encouraged to consider the Coles County Public Health Department and/or the Charleston Family Planning Center.
Emergency Contraception Access Through On-Campus Means
- Health and Counseling Services maintains a Health Kiosk/Vending Machine, located in the East Wing on the 1st floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Student Union which offers Emergency Contraception and external condoms for nominal prices. The vending machine is available 24/7, 365 days a year.
- Emergency Contraception is currently $12/unit.
Condom Access Through On-Campus Means
- Health and Counseling Service's Health Education Resource Center offers students condoms and safer sex packets through their office, and through educational programming. These packets contain external condoms, lube, and dental dams. Internal condoms and latex free options are available by request. Students may obtain these by visiting Room 2201, Blair Hall, M-F, 8:00 - 4:30 during Fall/Spring Semester business days; M-R 8:00 - 4:30 and 8:00 -12 F, during Summer hours.
- In partnership with Health and Counseling Services, Booth Library offers "Mini-Safer Sex Packets" that include 2 condoms and other sexual education tools. These are located on the library's 3rd floor, room 3467.
- For off-campus care, students are encouraged to consider the Coles County Public Health Department and/or the Charleston Family Planning Center.
Medication Abortion Access
- As an organization, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Systems does not perform elective abortions (procedural or medication). When medication abortion or procedural abortion access is requested to SBL-EIU Medical Clinic providers, students will be referred to external providers utilizing SBLHS referral pathways.
