The Construction Management program at EIU….
- Takes pride in our close relationships with students, fostered by small class sizes
in which instructors and students interact freely and personally.

- Is a place where education is formal, yet informal: We endeavor to create an atmosphere
where formal and first-class learning takes place in a relaxed, participative, collegial,
and friendly environment.
- Works to help students establish a network of construction industry professionals
early on in their college experience, enabling them to engage with the people who
will provide them with careers after graduation.
- Has a 100% placement rate. If you want a career in construction after you graduate,
you get it. Our students get the careers they seek when they leave EIU, period.
- Combines hands-on learning in a variety of laboratory settings with rigorous, relevant
classroom instruction.
- Teaches students about the materials and processes of construction by allowing students
to “get their hands dirty”. We build things. We break things to test the limits of
their strength.
- Teaches the practices and processes of the building trade, so students learn to appreciate
the craft and the craftspeople who do the work of construction.
- Teaches students about modern and sustainable materials and procedures, so students
learn to assist designers and construction professionals in the best ways and means
to develop and build a wide range of structures.
- Teaches students about safety through both required and elective OSHA-approved courses,
so students earn an added attraction to employers who seek this knowledge and ability
to prevent accidents, comply with safety regulations, and reduce liability.
- Provides the opportunity for paid internships with top-notch construction companies
to students who seek them. Companies like Hensel-Phelps, Bulley & Andrews, F.H. Paschen,
Grunloh Building, McCarthy Building Co, Preferred Electric, Stevens Industries, and
many others commonly provide internships, which often lead to careers after graduation.
- Provides students with the opportunity to participate in field trips to construction
sites where the concepts they are learning about in the classroom and lab are being
put into practice.
- Provides students with the opportunity to attend construction industry competitions,
product shows, and events where construction companies gather, further enriching their
education and encouraging the building of their personal network.
- Provides students with the opportunity to serve the community by participating in
the program’s RSO (Registered Student Organization), CPR. CPR stands for Construction
Project Response Team and is a student-led and managed group that helps nonprofit
organizations by building projects intended to help those less fortunate.
- Opens the door to students to be a part of a timeless profession rich in its history
and which provides a challenging and rewarding working life.
