At Eastern Illinois University, the safety and well-being of its students, employees, and community members remains the highest priority. EIU is grateful for the rapid response of the University Police Department and local law enforcement partners yesterday, whose quick actions helped ensure the safety of the EIU campus community.
Although yesterday’s reported threat was determined to be a hoax, EIU recognizes that some of its emergency messaging created confusion or concern. Emergency situations are dynamic and complex, and EIU recognizes the importance of clear, timely, and easily understood communication in such moments.
As a learning institution, EIU will use yesterday's event as an opportunity to strengthen its alert messaging protocols. The University is reviewing its emergency communication processes and will use feedback from the campus and community to improve how EIU shares critical information in the future. The campus community will be informed as updates and enhancements are implemented.

Eastern Illinois University appreciates the patience, cooperation, and trust of its campus and community and looks forward to working together to create, maintain, and promote a safe and supportive environment for all.
