EIU fall commencement ceremonies set for Saturday, Dec. 14

(Charleston, IL) – Eastern Illinois University will host its fall 2019 commencement celebration in two ceremonies in Lantz Arena on Saturday, December 14.

Ceremonies will take place at 10 a.m. for students graduating from the College of Health and Human Services and the Lumpkin College of Business and Technology, and at 12:30 p.m. for students graduating from the College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students enrolled in the Graduate School will march with their respective colleges. In all, more than 1,000 students eligible to graduate in EIU’s fall semester ceremonies.

EIU President Dr. David M. Glassman will preside, with music provided by the EIU Wind Symphony.

EIU alumnus and City Treasurer for the City of Chicago and former State Representative for the 10^th District Melissa Conyears-Ervin will deliver the charge to the class for both ceremonies. Conyears-Ervin has seen firsthand the value of education and faith from her mother. Through hard work and determination, she became the first in her family to graduate from college, with a finance degree from EIU and later an MBA from Roosevelt University. As City Treasurer, she hopes to channel her private sector and financial training on ways to bring development into Chicago’s neighborhoods and to cultivate a supportive environment for Chicago’s working families.

Student speakers will be Jalisha Smith, a master of sciences in Human Services Program Administration degree candidate who will represent the Graduate School during the 10 a.m. ceremony, and Kyle Wilcoxon, who will represent the School of Extended Learning at the 12:30 p.m. ceremony.
