An individual recognized nationally for his work for the educational, political and economic advancement of the Latina/o community will present the keynote address during the sixth annual symposium of Eastern Illinois University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Global Diversity.
Juan Salgado, president and CEO of Chicago’s Instituto del Progreso Latino since 2001, will present “Your Voice Matters” as part of the day-long symposium set to take place Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Jr. Union on the EIU campus. Admission to all symposium events is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is not required.
Salgado, who, through his leadership role, has led the institute through a period of award-winning recognition and historic organizational growth establishing national best-practice educational and workforce models, was recognized by the White House in 2011 as one of 13 people nationally serving as Champions of Change for social innovation in their communities.
More recently, Salgado was selected to join the prestigious MacArthur Fellows Class of 2015 in recognition of his strong community leadership and his innovative approach to education in the Latino immigrant community.
In addition to Salgado’s talk, the symposium, slated to begin at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast, will include a series of half-hour talks by EIU faculty. Attendees may come and go to the following as their schedules allow:
