Eastern Illinois University will host a farewell reception honoring Tom Michael from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 11 in the Lantz Complex, celebrating the longtime EIU Athletic Director’s commitment to EIU student-athletes and to Panther Athletics.

Over the past 12 years at EIU, Michael has played a transformative role in elevating EIU Athletics—guiding the department through change while building a stronger, more competitive future. Under his leadership, EIU Athletics has experienced sustained success on and off the field. He has helped the EIU Panthers capture multiple Ohio Valley Conference championships and routinely advance to NCAA postseason play. Beyond competition, Michael has positioned EIU as a leader at the national level, serving in key roles with organizations such as FCSADA and the NCAA, ensuring the University had a voice during a rapidly evolving era in college athletics.

Under Michael’s guidance, EIU student-athletes consistently excelled in the classroom, leading the conference in academic honors and achieving record-setting team GPAs. His vision emphasized not only athletic achievement, but also personal development, academic success, and lifelong opportunity—creating an environment where student-athletes could thrive in every aspect of their collegiate journeys.

Since 2014, Michael’s leadership has sparked energy across campus and among the Panther fanbase. Through significant facility upgrades, enhanced game-day experiences, and successful fundraising efforts, he helped advance the pride and passion we all feel for EIU Athletics, and he will leave behind a lasting imprint on the spirit and culture of Panther Nation.

As colleagues and students gather Monday to celebrate his accomplishments, EIU extends its deepest gratitude to Tom Michael for his dedication, integrity, and unwavering belief in Eastern Illinois University. His legacy will continue to shape the department for years to come. EIU wishes Michael and his family all the best in his next chapter.
