Exhibits 2010

• "Centennial Celebration of Dr. Nkrumah."

  "Centennial Celebration of Dr. Nkrumah." Located in the South Lobby of Booth Library, this display depicts the Centennial Celebration of Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana. The exhibition honors his contribution as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement of the '60s and a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (African Union). Klevor Abo and Johnson Kofi Kuma are the curators.

• Darwin Day

  "Darwin Day Library Resources." A selection of book covers from the subject areas of evolution and biology are on display in the Marvin Foyer as part of the Darwin Day events on campus. The display also includes selected publications from Darwin Day presenters. The exhibit is on display through Feb. 18. Stacey Knight-Davis is the curator.

• U.S. Serial Set

  Historical documents, maps and books from the U.S. Serial Set are highlighted in an exhibit located in the Marvin Foyer of Booth Library for the month of February. These materials cover the breadth of the interests of the Congress throughout U.S. history -- political, scientific, social and technological. The recently acquired materials are currently undergoing conservation treatment before being made available for use. Lois Dickenson is the curator.

• 100 Years of Panther Basketball

  This year Eastern Illinois University will celebrate 100 years of Panther basketball. This display depicts a brief photographic history of the past 100 years of Panther men's basketball, highlighting the men's basketball All Century Team. The exhibit is on display through March in Booth Library's North Lobby. Rich Moser and Sandy King are the curators.

• Andean Mythical Representations

  An exhibit, titled "Andean Mythical Representations" and consisting of artisans' works from Northern Argentina, is on display in the Reference Gallery through March. Curators: Allen Lanham, Jose Deustua and Pamela Ortega.

• Big River and King Corn Exhibit

  Corn is everywhere; it's found in gum, toothpaste, bread, ice cream, peanut butter, and many other foods. To produce that much corn, tons of chemicals are applied to the land, some of which ends up in rivers, lakes, the ocean, our food, and even us. These issues are explored in the films King Corn and Big River. An exhibit providing more information on the films and related issues is on display in the Reference Hallway until the end of April. A screening of King Corn will be held April 21 in Phipps Auditorium.

• Commencement at EIU

  Featuring an array of academic regalia and archival photographs, this exhibit from the Alumni Services Office focuses on the history and customs of commencement exercises at Eastern. On display are such items as the presidential chain of office, the official academic mace, various diplomas and caps and gowns. Curated by Chelsea Frederick, Robert Hillman and Stacey Knight-Davis, the exhibit will be on display in the north lobby through May.

• Constant Motion: The Job of Railway Post Office Clerks

  "Constant Motion: The Job of Railway Post Office Clerks," on display in the Marvin Foyer through May 30, features primary sources provided by former railway post office clerks and loaned to the Eastern's Teaching with Primary Sources program. Exhibit themes include "Before Boarding: Preparation, Schemes and Exams," "Doing the Job Right at 60-80 MPH: Tools of the Trade" and "The Final Run."

• Whimsy in the Kitchen

  Come and see a sample of the amazing variety of novelty ceramics produced in the 20th century. Everyday objects take on delightful and unexpected forms in this exhibit in the Reference Hallway. You'll find milk pitchers, cookie jars, sugars, creamers, and other assorted tableware in the shape of various animals and vegetables. On display until mid-summer. Curator Stacey Knight-Davis, with the assistance of library faculty and staff.

• 2009-2010 Cultivating Creativity Children's Art Exhibit

  The traveling exhibition "Cultivating Creativity 2009-2010: Consolidated Communications Children's Art Exhibit" continues its year-long tour and will be on display at Booth Library through June 28. Sponsored by Consolidated Communications and the Tarble Arts Center, the exhibit will travel to 12 area communities, from Assumption to Paris and from Tuscola to Effingham. Presented is art by 41 students, each representing a different school. The art was created during the 2008-2009 school year. This program showcases some of the outstanding art by area students and helps raise awareness of the importance of including the arts as part of the regular school curriculum. • Hawaii: Islands of Life

  This exhibit features images of the natural beauty of Hawaii and suggested books on Hawaii. Curated by Karen Whisler.

• Jazz Blossoms

  This display, located in the Marvin Foyer, showcases famous jazz musicians over time. The curator is Allen Lanham.

• Celebrating President Gilbert C. Fite, 1918-2010

  This exhibit pays tribute to the career of Gilbert Courtland Fite, who served as Eastern's president from 1971-1976, and who died recently in Fort Myers, Florida at the age of 92. The exhibit traces Fite's life from a farm in rural South Dakota to a distinguished career as an agricultural historian and university administrator. Curated by University Archivist Robert Hillman, the exhibit will be on display in the south lobby of Booth Library for the rest of the summer.

• Italy: The Good Life

  Three student art pieces that were completed this summer are on display in Booth Library's Marvin Foyer. As part of the independent project, "Italy: The Good Life," the faculty-led summer study abroad program is sponsored by EIU's Philosophy Department. The program, designed for all majors and all years of study, covered several cities in northern Italy. Teresa Britton is the curator.

• Mexican Devotional Paintings Old and New

  This exhibit showcases a selection of 19th-, 20th- and 21st-century Mexican devotional paintings in the form of ex-votos and retablos, accompanied by historical and cultural information about the works exhibited. The display, located in the 3000 level of Booth Library, is curated by Kit Morice of the Tarble Arts Center.

• Exhibit Opening Reception - Teachers Tame the Prairie

  Booth Library invites you to the opening reception and program for the "Teachers Tame the Prairie: Vignettes of Eastern Illinois University and Education in Illinois" exhibition, set to begin at 7 p.m, Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Marvin Foyer.

  Following opening remarks by President Bill Perry and Provost Blair Lord, Terry Barnhart and Charles Titus, professors of history, will present "The Coming of the Normal School: Vision and Mission in the Founding of Eastern Illinois University, 1895-1900" and "In Search of Eden: America's Endless Journey Toward School Reform," respectively, at 7:30 p.m. in the adjacent Reference West Reading Room. Light refreshments will be served.

  The exhibit will be on display in the Marvin Foyer of Booth Library between Oct. 12 and Dec. 10 during regular library hours.

• Louisa May Alcott: Transcendentalism's Daughter

  This exhibit showcases the life of American novelist Louisa May Alcott. She is best known as the author of "Little Women." The display is located at the south entrance of Booth Library and curated by Janice Derr, Johna Shackles and Karen Whisler.
